9 “Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father who is in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

10 ‘Your kingdom come.

Your will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.

12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’

Matthew 6:9-13

The Lord’s Prayer. So short, yet so power packed. Often times, it has been overwhelming and intimidating to me, though our Lord Jesus himself told His disciples that this is how they should pray. Just in case you didn’t know, the Bible is clear that they weren’t the most well educated boys on the planet! Maybe it is paralyzing to me because even in my best efforts, my motivation has never been perfectly Godly. Maybe it’s the fact that Jesus, being larger than life, tells us to imitate Him while all of my cognitive understanding reminds me of the impossibility of that very command.

In my 32 years of life, most of that being a follower of Christ, I’ve never really quite “got it.” I’ve never had that “ah ha” moment. And then, during my umpteenth time reading and meditating on this scripture I had an epiphany…..

Acknowledgement.

Dependence.

I know, I know. Not all that earth shattering of a moment, but settling none the less. These two words, epitomize the Lord’s prayer. These five verses ooze with the reminder that everything we are and everything we have is because of God and sustained by God. For me, this week, this is all I need. I acknowledge God as Lord and Savior, and I admit and rejoice in my complete and utter dependence on Him.
