If you have been wondering what the Devotional is about, than this post is for you and your daughter. This particular devotional is one of my personal favorites!

And if you already have a copy, I’d love to hear from you and your girls!

Wanting It All

I love doll babies! No, I do not play with them (that much) anymore, but as a little girl I would spend hours play- ing with my dolls. I had all kinds of dolls: big dolls, little dolls, and dolls that talked. I even had a doll that could write her name!

I do not have any sisters and when I played, my dolls were all mine. I loved it that way! However, it did make it difficult to share when friends visited.

One time, while a few of my dolls and I were visiting my grandparents’ home, my grandmother invited another little girl over to play. She was very nice and we were having a lot of fun…until she asked to play with my dolls.

Uh oh. We had a problem. I did not want to share.

Seeing that I was having trouble sharing, my grandfather had me line the dolls up. Then he told me to choose which ones I wanted to play with first and to leave the rest of the dolls on the wall for my new friend to enjoy. He explained that after a little while we could switch the dolls or even find a way to play together. Sounded like a good plan, right?

Wrong.

I knelt down next to my dolls, pointed at them one by one, and chose them all! I then stood against the wall and looked down at the floor. I knew my grandparents were disappointed with me and my new friend had tears in her eyes.

I made the choice not to share but it did not make me happy. I had what I wanted but I felt alone and ashamed.

The thing is, I knew better and I knew that God did not want me to be selfish. Being selfish is easy but it does not feel great at all. I could not enjoy my dolls knowing how sad I made everyone else feel. Sharing and giving up something I wanted was hard, but it would have felt so much better.

God wants us to always put others first.

The Bible says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:3).

Sharing what we have or what is special to us is a way that we show God’s love to someone else. It’s also how we show God that we are thankful for what He has given us. God shares everything with us! He even shared His own Son, Jesus! If God can share and give us so many wonderful things, He wants us to do the same thing.

What can you choose to share today?

Dear God, help me to not be selfish and to be willing to share with others in need. Please show me how to share like You shared Jesus. In Jesus’s name, amen.
