It’s OK, Ask For Prayer

By: Lynette Davidson

Recently I had one of those days when nothing was really going wrong, but I just felt “spent” and tired. For no reason the week felt overwhelming and I just didn’t feel like I had enough energy to handle all that was going to be required of me in the upcoming days.

I found myself sitting on the laundry room floor at 9:00 pm with tears dripping off of my face (sometimes a girl just needs to cry for no good reason) drafting a text to a dear friend who lives miles away. It went something like this,

“I hate to bother you, but in this moment your name keeps popping into my mind. I’m wondering if you’d mind keeping me in your prayers over the next couple days. This feels a little bit like a pity party but I’m realizing that this might be a moment when I could use some extra prayer.”

My precious friend’s words in response to my text were so reassuring.

She reminded me that prayer is more than a spiritual chore, it is a privilege to pray for others and that when we ask for prayer we are taking action on what we believe – that prayer works and that our God is bigger than anything we may be facing today.

It’s kind of like getting flowers. Girls like flowers. But we expect the men in our life to read our minds and know exactly when we need them the most. If we told them when, it wouldn’t be as meaningful and I might as well go buy them myself…right?

In the same way, it’s nice to be prayed for. But we expect those around us to magically know when we need to be prayed for the most. Sometimes we just need to ask for it!

The focus of the text wasn’t so much about seeking out encouragement for myself as it was about allowing God’s strength to flow through another’s prayers and lift me up when I might have been too weak to fight the battle by myself.

It was about stepping out of my comfort zone and pride and asking for help.

Do you have women in your life who you can be real with and enter a “safe zone” together allowing yourselves to be vulnerable?

Today, do you need prayer? It’s ok to ask for it.
