Story

As the sun rose over the town of Redwood, a young dachshund was waking up. The birds were singing and the bees were buzzing over the lilacs. It was going to be a fantastic day.

The dachshund, Philbert, sat up. He drew up the curtains, and with much surprise, noticed that his friend, the chickadee, was not there. He always came to peck at the window to see if Philbert had treats.

“That’s odd. Where’s Jasper?” wondered Philbert.

Just then, he saw Jasper flutter into the Pine Forest. Philbert leaped out of bed and threw on his scarf. He needed to find Jasper.

“Philbert! Time for breakfast!” his mom called from downstairs.

After breakfast, Philbert explained to his mom all about his plan to find Jasper.

“That sounds fine, dear. Just be home before dark. Remember, the Pine Forest is a magical place. When you find him, bring him here. He could be hungry.” his mom said.

“Yes, mama, I will.” Philbert got up and headed out the door.

As Philbert quietly walked into the Pine Forest, he felt a chill go through his spine. “Brrr! It sure is cold here.” Philbert shivered.

Throughout the day, the air got cooler, then hotter. As the sun set over the hillside, Philbert realized that he was not going to be home before dark.

“Oh no! I’m lost!” Philbert cried.

Suddenly, a thick fog covered the land. Philbert remembered hearing his mom say something about God always being there for us. Philbert kneeled down and prayed, “Dear Lord, I’m lost. I need you to show me the way because you are The Way! Thank you, Amen.”

Immediately, Philbert saw a light, the size of a child’s thumb, in the fog. He felt a tug of warmth in his heart so he followed the light. Then, he came to a clearing. The fog parted, and there, holding a candle like the Statue of Liberty, was Jesus. Philbert was awestruck. Jesus lowered His candle and came over to Philbert. He crouched down and said, “I love you my child.” With that, Jesus vanished! It was really Him! The Son of God!

Philbert looked up. In the branches of an old pine, was Jasper. He got stuck looking for berries and was hungry. Philbert helped him down and they walked back to Philbert’s house together. And somehow, he knew exactly the way home.
