Imitators of God – Week 10

Think about a time you have copied someone, or someone has copied you. Usually it’s because of admiration. We tend to imitate the people we look up to. Ephesians 5:1 says, “Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his children.”

We as Christians should admire God so much for what He has done for us and for who He is that we should want to do everything He does and everything Jesus did. He is so amazing that we want our actions and lifestyle to align with who God is. The second part of this verse says, “because you are his children.” Just like a younger sister copies her older sister, or a friend copies another friend, that is how we should be with God. Later on in that passage, Paul tells us to live our lives following the example of Jesus.

So today, make your mentality: “What would Jesus do?” Let that be the reasoning behind the way you love, act, and treat people. Before you respond in frustration, before you make a decision, before you speak to someone, ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?” When we choose to imitate Him, we begin to reflect His love, kindness, grace, and truth to the people around us.

This also can apply to the way we treat ourselves. When we constantly speak lies over our lives, telling ourselves we’re not good enough, not loved, or not capable, we begin to believe those words. After a while we can start to believe those lies and they can crush our spirit. Words are so powerful because even God created the world through speaking. Throughout Genesis God spoke and creation came into existence. If words have that kind of power, we should be careful with how we use them.
