โโฆthe man who sighs after God, who is uneasy till he is made like Christ, that is the blessed man.โ
-Charles Spurgeon
I was reading a short devotion taken from Charles Spurgeonโs writings last night, and stumbled on this quote.ย His words are quite relieving for me because it explains a bit of the tug I feel that Iโm never able to put into my own words, but literally sense their presence all day and night.
Itโs that feeling of knowing the good I want to do, that I just canโt quite make happen.ย Itโs the desire to come home and have that perfect evening with my children where Iโm completely patient, loving, and cheerful.ย Itโs that convictionโฆthat I know I should give up my extra thirty minutes in the office to make sure I can relieve my wife from that long day at the helm, but ignore.ย You know, right?ย The sense that you want to share Jesus more with your neighbors and find ways to serve them, but the little youโve tried seems awkward or not enough.
I could go on and on, because the weightiness of Godโs call on my life seems too big for me to accomplish. I literally feel inadequate.ย ย But what I love about this quote is that Spurgeon reminds me and you that this feeling is a blessing from God.ย Itโs like God puts us in a situation and complete awareness of our total dependence on Him.
The uneasiness and desire to be like Christ, but ever failing to hit the markโฆ..
It is a blessing because it pushes me towards the father when I fail.
It is a blessing because it is the single largest motivating force for good in my life.
It is a blessing because it reminds me that one day Iโll finally be like Him.
โThe Spirit makes us sure about what we will be in the future. But now we groan silently, while we wait for God to show that we are his childrenโ
Romans 8:23
It is my prayer that this feeling, this tugโฆ.that Godโs Spirit puts this same discomfort in your spirit and in the spirit of our children.
