What Does The Bible Say About That?

Hi it’s Lynette here again…and this time I have a confession…I am a book lover.

So of course, I am raising my children to follow suit and… they don’t really have a choice!

In fact, my husband and I created a library for the kids under the stairs instead of using it for storage. There’s even a piece of artwork with the statement “Readers Become Leaders” hanging on the wall. The simple goal being that I want my kids to love books and develop a love for learning.

But really, what is there not to love? A good book will ignite imagination, spark conversation, and open doors to knowledge and worlds that you never knew existed.

I. Love. It.

However, there are some “doors” that I have tried to keep closed.  But every once in awhile, my children and I find ourselves face-to-page with beautifully written sentences that don’t speak an ounce of truth. Know what I mean?

Just the other day, I purchased a book that I thought would be fun and educational. This one was all about space. I usually read through them before passing them along to the kids, but for some reason I trusted this one (for no good reason). The kids spent a couple days reading through it, but one day they started talking about how the book mentioned aliens and that the sun would burn up in a billion years.

Oh my…! A new door had been opened.

At first, I was frustrated with myself  for not previewing this book more carefully as to protect their little minds. Then thought I should just make the best of it and use it as an opportunity to start a conversation with them.

Instead of hiding my kids under my protective shield, I’ve come to realize that there are benefits to taking such opportunities to discuss topics that either I don’t really want to discuss with my precious, innocent kids or it’s a topic I honestly would never even think to talk about.

So, I found a corner and sat down with my kids and posed the question, “What does the Bible say about that?” The next thing you know, the kids and I were on a journey for truth using the only book that counts!

Somehow a simple sentence or two about aliens and a burning sun turned into a great conversation about how science is great, but our trust is in God.

That one question, “What does the Bible say?” forces truth into any conversation! {Tweet This!}

I am committed to helping my kids to develop the habit of going to the Bible first with every other question they have. How comforting to know that with any question or in any situation my kids know to seek truth by going to the Bible first … not their friends, not the television, not a fiction book, not their own opinion.

Psalm 119:11 ~ “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

Make time today to submerse your world in His Word. {Tweet This}

How can you create opportunities throughout your day to hear from God?

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

1. Listen to your favorite worship music as you get dressed,

2. Post verses in random parts of the house,

3. Follow a devotional plan … check out YouVersion online or on your smart phone.

Whether your kids read it in a book or hear it on a playground, they will ask the hard questions. Always be ready to lead them to truth by asking the question “What does the Bible say?”
