3 Simple Ways to Help Our Kids Grow Spiritually

It can be easy as Mamas to think that we need to always do a gazillion things in the area of helping our kids grow spiritually. But, I think doing these three simple things can make a world of difference in our kids’ hearts for the Lord:

1)    Pray for our kids.
Such a simple thing that can be overlooked, but what a beautiful opportunity to be in step with the Spirit lifting our kids up to the Lord who loves them dearly.

2)    Read the Bible out in the open where they see us seeking the Lord.
I remember Sissy Goff, Christian Counselor, saying that a group of teenagers shared that what had the biggest impact on their faith walk was seeing their parents reading the Bible.

3)    Doing a 5- or 10-minute devotion time (or longer or shorter) during the day can be transforming.
Since my kids were in high chairs, breakfast time has been when we seek the Lord together and talk about Jesus. Now, my kids are in middle school, and we still take that time at breakfast to learn about God. We’ve done all kinds of devotions (I’ve listed some suggestions below).

Right now, we’re reading one verse of Proverbs and a page or two of “The Story” by Max Lucado most weekday mornings. The great thing about doing devotions at breakfast is that their mouths are full and they’re more attentive. But, if dinnertime works for you, awesome, or car time, or bedtime, or whenever.

What I’m getting at, is that there is no right way to seek the Lord together. But what is right, is to find some way to seek the Lord together and to grow and He will bless that, GREATLY. It does not have to be long. A lot of times, I think we feel too busy going in a million directions, but it is really important to take time for what matters. Whether it’s five minutes or longer isn’t the focus, but our hearts reaching out to the Lord is what matters.

When we miss a devotional time or more. It’s OKAY. Do it the next day. I don’t think God wants us to be walking about in guilt, but in freedom. We don’t HAVE to seek the Lord together. We GET to seek Him together. Let’s do this!
